Snow has been dumping in the mountains, and we predict a flurry of fun and plenty of cool things to see and do around Colorado this week, including International Women’s Day activities. But first things first: If you haven’t voted in the primary, today is the deadline.

Trailblazing Conversations: Duty Calls Book Launch

St. John Francis Regis Chapel, Regis University

Regis’s Rueckert-Hartman College for Health Professions and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion are hosting this dialogue with Dr. Antonia Novello and Jill Tietjen in celebration of Women’s History Month and the launch of Duty Calls: Lessons Learned From an Unexpected Life of Service. Novello shattered glass ceilings as the first woman and first Hispanic surgeon general of the United States. Joining her is co-author Jill Tietjen, an accomplished electrical engineer, author of fourteen books and an inductee into the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame.Together with Nita Gonzales, principal of Nuevo Amanecer, they’ll discuss public health, health equity for women and minorities, leadership, writing and leading a life devoted to service. The Names Change but Issues Stay the Same: Editorial Cartoonist Chuck Asay

Political cartoonists are close to an endangered species today, but Chuck Asay worked for the Colorado Springs Gazette for more than twenty years before he retired in 2007. He syndicated his work for six more years before finally putting down his pen. Now thirty of his cartoons are on display in the exhibit The Names Change but Issues Stay the Same at two Colorado Springs libraries. A workshop from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Ent Center Roopmat 21c will complement the exhibit; find out more here.

Identity, Power, and Art:  Know Your Neighborhood Workshop
Thursday, March 7, 5:30 p.m. mingling, program at 6 p.m.
RedLine Contemporary Art Center, 2350 Arapahoe Street

Join artist SPEAKS, the RiNo Art District and RedLine Contemporary Art Center for a series of workshops centered on exploring identity and creating art; the program runs through 2024 and will end with a group show. SPEAKS, aka Devin Urioste, was born and raised in Denver; his work is influenced by the culture in which he was raised and embodies what it means to give his community a voice. A Journey Through Nuclear Landscapes of the U.S. West

As part of the 2024 Fellowship Series, Dr. Paul Josephson, professor at Colby College, will offer a talk exploring the shaping of the nuclear West by the Cold War and the impact of national security desiderata on the environment. Admission is free; find out more here.

Persevering Legacy: Celebration of Women Composers

International Women’s Day: Community Panel on Women’s Health

WorldDenver will gather more than 900 community leaders, business executives, student and elected officials to celebrate inspiring women leaders who are advancing gender equality in Colorado and around the world. Although the luncheon honoring Maryam Monsef is ticketed, the Community Panel on Women’s Health, which will emphasize health equity for marginalized and under-resourced communities, is free; it will be followed by networking before the lunch. Empowering Teach-In on Impact of Tax Dollars on Gaza Genocide

On International Women’s Day, several peace and justice organizations, including CODEPINK Denver/Boulder, Denver Justice and Peace Committee, Jewish Voice for Peace, Colorado for Palestine Club, Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center, and Denver Peace Council are joining forces to host a teach-in to shed light on how our tax dollars perpetuate genocide in Gaza, with a particular focus on repercussions for Palestinian women and children. Winter Dew Tour

Center Village, Copper Mountain
Winter Dew Tour’s annual winter competition and festival returns to Copper Mountain; the three-day event will include the world’s top male and female skiers and snowboarders competing in individual Superpipe and Super Streetstyle, with finals taking place in the evening under the lights. The partner village will host various activities, as well as two nights of concerts and a special retrospective of the past twenty years of the Dew Tour. Ruby Hill Rail Yard, the official terrain park operated by Denver Parks & Recreation in partnership with Winter Park since 2007, has new rails, boxes and features configured for skill levels from beginner to advanced. Did you miss Motus Theater’s second-annual arts-based event inspiring action in alignment with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.? “Rebecoming Me” is a raw, vulnerable look at stories from five individuals who navigated the foster care system in Colorado. The 29-minute documentary highlights the incredible systemic challenges facing foster youth in the system, shares the wins and opportunities to be better stewards of the Colorado community of foster care, and bears witness to the lived experiences of these five individuals. Join the Colorado Freedom of Information Coalition, Tattered Cover bookstore and Sie FilmCenter for a Sunshine Week conversation about First Amendment, freedom-of-information and freedom-to-read issues in Colorado. “The ABCs of Book Banning,” an Academy Award-nominated short film, will be screened at the Sie FilmCenter. Panelists at the Tattered Cover event include Steve Staeger, the 9NEWS reporter who recently won a lawsuit against the City of Denver over the disclosure of text messages sent during and after a violent hailstorm at Red Rocks last summer; Steve Zansberg, First Amendment attorney and CFOIC president, who’ll discuss a new law that requires criminal courts in Colorado to livestream proceedings; and Karl Weber, editor of Why Books Still Matter,”a forthcoming book that honors the legacy of former Tattered Cover owner Joyce Meskis, and the event is dedicated to her. St. Patrick’s Day Parade

Start at Wynkoop Street at 19th Street
The 2024 St. Patrick’s Day Parade — the city’s 62nd annual — will stage in the Coors Field Parking Lot, then head down Wynkoop, take a left at 17th Street, and then another left on Blake (“Tooley,” to observe the holiday) and head up to 27th Street. Antiques Roadshow

Denver Botanic Gardens Chatfield Farms

Antiques Roadshow will visit Denver Botanic Gardens Chatfield Farms for an all-day appraisal event as part of the series’ 29th production tour of five cities. “Holding events at locations like Chatfield Farms provides an enriching experience for our guests and audiences that they may otherwise miss,” says Roadshow executive producer Marsha Bemko in an announcement. “Our cameras blanket the property, capturing appraisals with the action of the event as a backdrop and taking our audience ‘backstage’ to learn about meaningful history, cultures and unique settings across our country.” Admission is free, but tickets are required; each guest can bring two items for free verbal evaluations.
