The Olympics are in Paris but a bit of that sporting spirit will take place in Invercargill on Monday.

The New Zealand Olympic team is challenging New Zealanders to get into the winning spirit with a dynamic event ahead of the Olympic Games next month.

Presented in partnership with Cycling New Zealand, Tour de Fern — Sprint for the Fern is a public cycling activation that will visit the SIT Velodrome in Invercargill as part of the day’s wider International Olympic Day celebrations.

The public can attend the event between 3pm and 8.30pm after local schools have visited during the day for a variety of activities including Tour de Fern.

They can jump on Technogym Ride stationary smart bikes to experience a simulation of what it is like to race 300m along the Champs-Elysees.

All participants will be entered into a nationwide leaderboard to see who can sprint the course the fastest, being ranked against their peers and Olympic cyclists’ times.

Olympian and Commonwealth Games medal-winning boxer Alexis Pritchard will be attending.

She is also New Zealand Olympic Committee’s athlete engagement lead.

Having started in Auckland and visited Tauranga, Wellington, Hamilton and Christchurch, this is the tour’s last stop.
